All about Portugal

The language of Portugal is Portuguese. Situated in the extreme south-west of

Europe, Portugal is bordered to the North and East by Spain, to the South and West by the Atlantic Ocean. North of the country are the Serra de Estrela, 1991 meters high; to the South is dominated by the main plains of the Alentejo, is crossed by the River Guadiana.

The Portuguese rivers cross the country from east to west: Tejo, Douro, Guadiana.

The capital

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal.

Is a city that has been influenced by many different cultures distant in time. Important is monumental area of Belém with its World Heritage monuments , the medieval quarters. Along the coastal road you will find beaches and seaside.

Other cities

In the Portugal the most important cities are: Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Coimbra.

LE CRONACHE DI NARNIA

Le cronache di Narnia (The Chronicles of Narnia) è una serie di sette romanzi per ragazzi di genere fantasy scritti da C. S. Lewis.

Presentano le avventure di un gruppo di bambini che giocano un ruolo centrale nella storia del reame di Narnia, dove gli animali parlano, la magia è comune ed il Bene è in lotta con il Male. Oltre alle numerose tematiche cristiane, la serie prende in prestito anche personaggi e le idee della mitologia greca e romana, come pure dai racconti tradizionali britannici e dalle fiabe irlandesi.

Cinema

Le cronache di Narnia - Il leone, la strega e l'armadio (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) è un film statunitense del 2005 diretto da Andrew Adamson. È basato sul romanzo Il leone, la strega e l'armadio, uno dei libri che compongono il ciclo Le cronache di Narnia di C. S. Lewis. Il film è stato prodotto dalla Walden Media e distribuito dalla Walt Disney Pictures. La pellicola è uscita nelle sale negli Stati Uniti d'America il 9 dicembre 2005, mentre nelle sale italiane il 21 dicembre 2005.

Il romanzo fu il primo ad essere pubblicato, nel 1950, ma nella pubblicazione del ciclo nel 1994 la Harper Collins seguì l'ordine suggerito da Douglas Gresham, figlio adottivo di Lewis, in cui Il leone, la strega e l'armadio era preceduto da Il nipote del mago.

All'adattamento della sceneggiatura hanno preso parte Ann Peacock, Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely e lo stesso regista. Le musiche sono state curate da Harry Gregson-Williams, gli effetti speciali sono stati realizzati dalla Industrial Light and Magic di George Lucas.

Le riprese del film sono iniziate il 28 giugno 2004 e sono terminate a gennaio 2005, gran parte del film è stato girato nella Repubblica Ceca, il budget del film è stato di circa 180.000.000 $.

Il regista Andrew Adamson è conosciuto al grande pubblico per aver diretto Shrek e Shrek 2.

Nel 2008 è stato prodotto il secondo episodio, Le cronache di Narnia - Il principe Caspian, sempre diretto da Andrew Adamson Nel 2009 iniziano le riprese del seguito Le cronache di Narnia - Il viaggio del veliero uscito il 17 dicembre 2010 nei cinema italiani.

Portugal

Portugal has a much lower surface to Italy, about one-third . Has the form of a
rectangle elongated in north-south direction with the two sides on the border with Spain and the other two open Atlantic Ocean.

The territory is the terminal part of the Spanish Meseta . The Tagus River divides it into two parts with different characteristics .
- The northern region is mostly mountainous , because of the Meseta plateau reaches the Atlantic. The main chain is the Serra de Estrela, the highest peak of the whole country (1991 m).
- The southern region is more regular : low-lying areas are interspersed with gently rolling hills . On the southern end lie the low hills of the Algarve.

The rivers of Portugal are the same people who run in the Spanish Meseta and have run their course here terminale.A north flows the Douro (in Spanish , Duero ), which cuts through the mountainous area , the center runs the Tejo (in Spanish, Tagus ) which describes a curve and ends with a big estuary . Instead, the Guadiana River is a border and flows from north to south .

The weather is rainy in the north , where the humid winds invest the slopes of the mountains. The rest of the country instead has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The natural environment is represented by extensive forests , which cover 35.7% of the territory. The slopes of the mountains are covered with pine and chestnut trees. Along the Atlantic coast there are pines , oaks and shrubs of the Mediterranean.

POPULATION

Portugal has about 10 million people, far fewer than in Italy. The official language is Portuguese , which is spoken throughout the territory . It , contrary to what some think , it is
very different from Spanish .
Portugal is divided into five regions : north and center form the northern part , is at the center of Lisbon , Alentejo eAlgarve form the south. The population is numerous in the north and in the Lisbon area , the southern part is almost deserted , with the exception of the Algarve. The weak economic growth in Portugal has prompted many people to emigrate more than one million Portuguese working in other countries, especially in Spain and France.
Portuguese territory are also the Azores , an archipelago in the Atlantic between Europe and America , and the island of Madeira, both autonomous regions.
In Portugal, the urban population constitutes 54.6% of the total, a low percentage . the large
are two cities : the capital Lisbon and Porto, both the Atlantic. For the rest, there are few cities of about 100 000 inhabitants and many towns and villages, especially along the coast.

ECONOMY

Portugal is among the last on the list in the European Union for the wealth produced . Its economy is growing a bit ' in all areas , but rather slow pace .
Agriculture shows the characters of backwardness with a high percentage of employees (12 %). it is
still far from a true modernization , as evidenced by the presence of small plots of land to the north and to the south of the estate , in the Alentejo .
The main crop is the grapevine , which provides products of international fame, such as Porto and Madeira.
Discreet production of cereals, vegetables, fruit crops and olive trees , good to cork , which places
Portugal ranks high in the world. Also important is the farming practiced in the north of the country. Fishing provides copious amounts of tuna and sardines for canning .
The main mineral resources are tungsten and pyrites ( iron ore) , and it is good production
hydropower . There are steel industries , metallurgical, chemical and mechanical properties, with a total employment of 34% , but even this sector remains rather statico.Attiva is instead the textile industry , which boasts ancient traditions.
The tertiary sector , with 54 % of the workforce , Portugal relegates the last place in the ranking of EU countries by percentage of employees.
However, in recent years , the tourism sector has assumed considerable importance in the economy of the country , especially in the presence of seaside resorts in the Algarve and in the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira.

Invictus

Invictus è una poesia scritta dal poeta inglese William Ernest Henley (1849-1903).

Origine e storia della poesia

Il titolo proviene dal latino e significa "non vinto", ossia "mai sconfitto". Fu pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1888 nel Book of Verses di Henley.
All'età di 12 anni, Henley rimase vittima del morbo di Pott, una grave forma di tubercolosi ossea. Nonostante ciò, riuscì a continuare i suoi studi e a tentare una carriera giornalistica a Londra. Il suo lavoro, però, fu interrotto continuamente dalla grave patologia, che all'età di 25 anni lo costrinse all'amputazione di una gamba per sopravvivere. Henley non si scoraggiò e continuò a vivere per circa 30 anni con una protesi artificiale, fino all'età di 53 anni.
La poesia Invictus fu scritta proprio sul letto di un ospedale.
La poesia era usata da Nelson Mandela per alleviare gli anni della sua prigionia durante l'apartheid. Per questo è anche citata nel film Invictus - L'invincibile, del 2009, diretto da Clint Eastwood con Morgan Freeman e Matt Damon.
